About Wallington URC

Wallington United Reformed Church is situated in the London Borough of Sutton approximately 12 miles southwest of central London. WURC was formed in 1987 through the union of Christ Church URC (ex-Presbyterian, founded 1881) and Holmwood Gardens URC (ex-Congregational, founded 1907). Our neighbouring URCs can be found in Sutton and Cheam to the west, Croydon to the east and Purley to the south.

WURC is a lively community with a strong sense of family. We have a vigorous life of worship, social and commmunity activities, with many groups meeting each week on and off the premises. Our fellowship reflects the local population, with people of all ages who bring a wide diversity of gifts, family backgrounds and experiences to the life of our church. We have a formal membership of around 80, and a community roll of about 140. Typical attendance at our morning worship averages around 50 to 60, with between 10 and 20 children and young people in the Junior Church.

Our Vision, adopted in 1997, reaffirms our commitment to being a welcoming and lively church, and endorses our understanding of our Healing Ministry. Following the adoption of this vision, we embarked on a major fundraising programme to enable the redevelopment of our premises which was completed in 2004. In March 2007 we marked the centenary of worship on our current site, beginning a year of celebrations and social events which concluded with a gala concert in March 2008.

Our church has, at its centre, Church Meeting, which meets 10 times a year, and an Elders Meeting. Ordained for life, our Elders are elected to serve for terms three years. Both serving and non-serving Elders play a practical role in the pastoral care and oversight of the members of the church community. Day-to-day management is handled by the church officers and Elders Meeting supported by a structure of three Working Groups.

Wallington URC is part of the Southern Synod of the United Reformed Church, and a member of the Croydon Area Co-ordinating Team covering 19 churches in south London, Surrey and Sussex. More locally, we are one of seven local URCs that work together through the Croydon Community of Churches.
